Course Overview

Stage 1 Geography prepares students for Stage 2 Geography and future pathways in areas such as environmental science, urban planning, sustainability, tourism, education, agriculture, and policy development. It builds important skills in spatial thinking, critical analysis, and practical fieldwork, which are highly valued in careers that focus on understanding and managing the relationship between people and the environment.

In this course, students learn how to investigate geographical questions, carry out fieldwork, and use spatial technologies. They explore patterns, processes, and connections between different environments and societies, and apply their learning to real-world issues. Topics include sustainable places, natural and humanmade hazards, and contemporary challenges both locally and globally. There is a strong focus on critical thinking, ethical reflection, and creating practical, solution-based recommendations.

It is recommended that students complete at least one semester of Stage 1 Geography if they wish to continue with Stage 2 Geography in Year 12.
