Course Overview

Stage 1 Music Studies is suited to students interested in pathways within the music industry, including performance, composition, audio production, and music education. Students develop an understanding of professional practices and potential careers in creative industries.


Students build advanced musical skills in performance and/or composition, with a focus on developing technique, musical expression, music notation and stylistic understanding. Students engage in areas such as rehearsal processes, arranging, improvisation, music theory, and critical listening, alongside analysis and reflection on their own and others’ work.


This course provides a pathway into Stage 2 Music subjects. Students are expected to participate in performances or presentations and commit to regular practice and rehearsals outside of class time.


It is strongly recommended that students successfully complete at least 1 semester of Stage 1 Music if they wish to enrol in Stage 2 Music subjects.
