Course Overview
Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics cater to students who show strong aptitude or interest in Mathematics. Mathematical Methods is a prerequisite or highly recommended for a range of tertiary studies including engineering, science, and mathematics. Specialist Mathematics is required or recommended for a range of tertiary courses including physics, mathematics and some engineering courses.
This year 11 course allows students with strong skills in mathematics to develop the algebraic, critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical skills they require for success in Stage 2 Methods and Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics. Stage 1 Methods continues the work from pre-Methods and builds knowledge of calculus, continuous and discrete probability functions and statistics, further trigonometry, vectors, complex numbers, and matrices. Students are given the opportunity to develop their skills in self-guided mathematical investigations. The course follows the SACE Stage 1 Mathematics Subject Outline. By the end of this course, students have covered all pre-requisite topics and may enrol in Stage 2 Mathematical Methods and Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics.
All year 11 students must successfully complete one semester of mathematics.
